West India

The murals and sculptures of the rock-cut Ajanta and Ellora Caves in Aurangabad, dating from the 2th century BC, in the western state of Maharashtra, stand as testimony to the Buddhist influences in Indian art. The monuments built by the Rashtrakuta kings have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.

To get a taste of Portuguese culture, India’s earliest colonial power; do not forget to include Goa in your travel itinerary. Goa has two World Heritage Sites – the Bom Jesus Basilica, which holds the mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier, and the churches and convents of Old Goa. The state also has some of the most beautiful beaches in the country.
